Ecotrail in the northern Iguaçu National Park

Ecology of old-growth seasonal tropical forest in a short and easy access trail in Céu Azul-PR. This forest presents high biodiversity and a 30 m canopy, where an incredible population of palm trees, ferns and rare species fill the understory. Perfect for who wants to understand the Brazilian subtropical forest in a glimpse.

Hiking in the northern Iguaçu National Park

An option for those who wants a short-term scape from the crowded Foz do Iguaçu trails and goes into the most preserved forests of the Iguaçu National Park. In an old-growth seasonal tropical forest in Céu Azul-PR,   we will hike along the Blue River in a medium level of difficulty trail.  We will feel the climax forest ecosystem, and enjoy  waterfalls, rare species of the Atlantic forest and centenary trees.

FIELD TRIP PO 29
Ecological restoration in demonstrative area at the Federal Technological University of Paraná: comparing passive restoration, nucleation and high diversity plantations.
(guided in English)

The trip begins with a beautiful boat trip along the Iguaçu River, in the margins of the Iguaçu National Park, between Brazil and Argentina, with possible sightings of alligators and birds, headed to Capanema-PR port. After, we follow to the Federal Technological University of Paraná, Dois Vizinhos-PR, where we will be visiting a demonstrative area of ecological restoration that compares passive, nucleation and high diversity plantations techniques, in a well controlled 7 y-old scientific experiment (see Bechara et al. 2016, Biodiv Conserv; and Vogel et al. 2015, Trop Conserv Sci.), guided by Prof. Bechara.
After an overnight stay in front of the beautiful Lago Dourado Municipal Park /(jogging area and swimming pool), the trip continues towards Capanema-PR port. From here we go back to Foz do Iguaçu-PR by boat along the Iguaçu River.

We begin with a boat trip along the Iguaçu River, in the margins of the National Park up to the entrance of the Capasso trail. After hiking, we continue by boat for a tropical lunch in the Sun Island (Ilha do Sol), between Brazil and Argentina.
The trip continues by boat towards the Silva Jardim River, followed by hiking in an old-growth forest, and enjoying a beautiful waterfall. We return by a floating boat.

Wildlife in the Sun Island, eastern Iguaçu National Park

Navigating in low speed and silence for contemplation of sightings and vocalizations: the destination is the Sun Island (Ilha do Sol), located at the Iguaçu River between Brazil and Argentina.

It will be potentially possible to observe birds, monkeys, rodents and alligators. The trip includes an overnight stay in simple accommodations or camping in the Island. A good choice for those who wants to passively interact with the wild fauna nearby the National Park.

FIELD TRIP PO 33
XINGU CANCELLED

The Xingu Seed Network (RSX) was created 10 years ago from a facilitation process to put into practice the conservation and valuation of socio-environmental diversity, aiming at responding to a demand for native seeds, a basic raw material for the recovery of forests in the Region of the headwaters of the Xingu River, located in the State of Mato Grosso, in a transition region between the Amazon and Cerrado Biomes.

It is a network of exchanges and purchases of seeds of local native species that generates income for small landholders and indigenous communities, also serving as a channel of communication and exchange of knowledge that increase the values ​​of forest, cerrado and its diverse cultural uses among seed collectors, nurseries, NGOs, rural owners and researchers.

The itinerary will include a visit to the municipal nursery and seed collection house in Canarana - MS, to the Xavante Ripá village to know the work of collecting and processing seeds, as well as visiting some restoration plantations of the Ikatu Xingu Campaign with the use of the “muvuca” technique. Seeds and the research project of restoration of Legal Reserve for economic exploitation purposes is coordinated by EMBRAPA Agrossilvopastoril.
